The Title 1 Academic Achievement Award recognizes schools that demonstrate significant student progress on the California academic content standards as measured by annual testing. This distinction is awarded by the California Department of Education to recognize those schools that have made the greatest gains in closing the achievement gap. California's Title 1 Academic Achievement Award program was designed to identify and honor Title 1 schools that have made significant progress toward meeting or exceeding Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
To be eligible, the California Board of Education requires Title 1 schools to meet a designated median API score in both English-language arts and mathematics and must satisfy several criteria, including surpassing the growth target in Academic Performance Index (API) test scores, as well as meeting the targets in 2006-07 and 2007-08. The Index is one of the measures required under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
It’s the second year Bayside Elementary school has made the academic list.
“It’s fantastic improvement by our students,” said district Superintendent Debra Bradley. “We’ve seen continued improvement over the past couple of years.”
